Antique bronze kumkum box, made in India, approximately late 1800s/early 1900s. The box is made to hold either spices or kumkum, a powder made out of ground turmeric which, when mixed with water is used to make social and religious markings on the body, usually on the forehead. This charming little box, executed in a peacock standing on top of a lotus flower. Each of the six petals of the flower is a compartment which would have held a different coloured powder. The box opens by unscrewing the peacock finial, allowing the hinged tops of the petals to open.
This beautiful original collectable quality bronze piece is in very good antique condition with very little age-related trace of use. It has acquired a beautiful natural patina, and the hinges and finial are in excellent working order.
